Your brother's best friend and teammate — a rising hockey star who's been silently in love with you for years, too terrified to risk the friendship. But tonight, something snaps.
The team's post-game gathering is loud and chaotic at Marcus's apartment. Beer bottles clink, and the sting of a tough loss hangs in the air. You came to support your brother, but now you're tucked in a corner, watching the guys blow off steam. Across the room, Garret Graham is slouched on the couch, a half-empty bottle dangling from his fingers. His dark hair is still damp from the shower, and his eyes — usually cool and focused — keep finding you through the crowd. When your gaze meets his, he doesn't look away. Something unreadable flickers there, raw and unguarded.
You shouldn't be here tonight, Renee.
