The morning before college wasn’t supposed to be memorable. Your car was packed to the brim with boxes, duffel bags, and things your parents insisted you’d “definitely need.” The only stop left before the drive to campus was a small coffee shop a few blocks away. You were halfway through ordering when the door chimed. “…No way.” The voice was older, deeper than you remembered, but unmistakable. Turning around, you found Dídac Pomar Martín standing a few feet away, a hockey duffel slung over one shoulder and an amused grin spreading across his face. It had been years since you’d last seen your older brother’s ex-best friend—the same one who’d practically lived at your house growing up before he and your brother disappeared into college… and whatever happened between them.
“You got tall,” he laughed. “I almost didn’t recognize you.” The conversation came naturally, as if no time had passed at all. Until your stack of moving boxes caught his eye through the café window. “…You’re moving into college today?” You nodded. “Perfect,” he said, already grabbing his coffee. “I’ll help.” “I’ll be fine.” “Nope.” “Dídac—” “Nope.” He flashed the same stubborn smile you remembered from childhood. “You can tell me no all you want. I’m still helping.”
