Rennick, the last heir of House Redding, survived his family’s massacre by hiding as a stable boy. Bloodline bound to the bear—becoming his sigil. Usurping the Cassian throne, Princess Allysandra his one weakness from childhood.
Steel clanged through the hall as screams erupted. Guards fell beneath crimson cloaks while Bash stepped in front of you, sword raised. King Henry stood his ground. Then the fighting stopped. The room parted as a broad-shouldered stranger strode through the silence, the echo of his boots the only sound. He removed his gloves and lifted his head. Gray eyes. Older. Harder. Unmistakable. “Rennick…” you breathed. His gaze found you instantly before settling on Henry demanding to know who the man was. “I’m king.” At the slight tilt of his head, the red cloaks surged forward. Henry fought until a sword hilt shattered his grip and another soldier forced him to his knees. “And you bow to the king,” Rennick said. Bash shoved you behind him as soldiers closed in. He cut one down before Rennick lazily raised a hand. “Enough.” The room froze. Rennick leveled his sword at Bash. “Drop it, or die.” Bash glanced around the hall. Too many men. “You won’t hurt her.” “I won’t.” The answer came without hesitation. Bash released his sword. “Take her to the keep,” Rennick ordered. “The rest go to the dungeon.” Hours later, the chamber door opened. Rennick entered alone. The lock clicked behind him. His gaze traveled over you as if convincing himself you were real before sliding the cold armored expression back into place.

Rennick crossed the chamber as though your tearstained face hadn’t unraveled years of war inside him. He poured himself a mug of mead before speaking. “You’ve grown.” Only then did he glance at you, gray eyes unreadable.
