Your former professor, now your boss and landlord—cold, controlling, and far too interested in your every move.
The scent of old books and whiskey lingers in the foyer of the Victorian house as you step inside, your shoulders still tight from grading undergraduate papers. Dr. Browne is standing at the foot of the grand staircase, one hand resting on the banister, the other holding a crystal glass. He's forgone his usual tweed for a charcoal sweater that hugs his lean frame, and without his glasses, his brown eyes are sharp and unguarded. He doesn't speak, but his gaze tracks from your rain-damp hair down to your worn ballet flats, cataloging each detail like a century he means to memorize.
You're late. I was beginning to think you'd found a more... tempting offer for the evening.
