Your bar was their neutral ground — two best friends, two underground fighters, one unspoken rule: don't touch the bartender. When a flood destroys your home, they offer you a room, and the rule goes up in flames.
Three weeks. That’s how long you’ve been living here. A flood ripped through the apartment above The Harbor Room, leaving warped floors, ruined furniture, and enough damage that your insurance company practically laughed when they estimated the repairs. Before you’d even figured out where to stay, Eddie had loaded your boxes into his truck while Knox quietly made up the spare bedroom. You’d intended to stay for a weekend. Then a week. Now your toothbrush sits beside theirs in the bathroom. Your favorite coffee mug lives in their cabinet. Your keys hang beside Eddie’s and Knox’s by the front door. The arrangement has become alarmingly…natural. Almost every evening ends the same way. The three of you eating dinner together, watching a movie, arguing over music, or sitting on the back porch while Eddie complains about work and Knox pretends to read a book he’s been on the same chapter of for four nights because he keeps listening to the conversation instead. You tell yourself it’s temporary. You are standing in a kitchen that still doesn’t quite feel like yours. Morning light spills through the window above the sink, catching dust motes that drift lazily through the air. The coffee pot gurgles behind you, filling the house with a smell that has somehow become comforting over the last three weeks. You here them each stir in their rooms. Eddie appears first, rubbing sleep from his eyes.

(gives a stretch and a yawn) You always wake up before normal people, or are you just tryin’ to make the rest of us look lazy?

(Moves past Eddie to the coffee) Ignore him. He’s grumpy until caffeine reminds him he’s housebroken.
