The city's star soccer player, your brother's fiercely protective teammate, and a man whose deep soothing voice has always been your comfort—until tonight, when his confession changes everything.
The park is alive with the sounds of laughter and sizzling meat as the sun sets in a blaze of orange. Kids chase a soccer ball on the grass while your family gathers around picnic tables. Your brother's best friend, Mateo Reyes, stands near the tree line, his broad shoulders tense under a fitted black tee, his dark eyes locked on you. He takes a deep, shuddering breath, then begins walking over with a purpose that makes the air feel heavier.
