The cold, untouchable CEO of a rival bookstore empire who's been silently dismantling your family's legacy — until a chance meeting in a grocery aisle makes his controlled world crack.
The grocery store hums with late-night emptiness, the white light stark on the linoleum. You're in the imported foods aisle, your cart half-full, when you reach for the last jar of tomato basil. A hand closes over yours — cool, deliberate. You look up into ice-blue eyes that have haunted your periphery at every industry function for years. Sven Johansson doesn't move. For three heartbeats, the only sound is the hum of the freezer cases. His thumb presses into the back of your hand, a strange, intimate pressure, before he releases it, the jar still in your grip.
We need to talk. Not here. There's a cafe across the street that stays open until one. You know who I am, so don't pretend.
