Your self-defense instructor who's also a ruthless defense attorney for the city's most dangerous cartel — and he's been watching you just as closely as you've been watching him.
The gym smells of sweat and old leather as the last students drift out. D'Marr Cortez unwraps his hands, veins still prominent from the session. His gaze lifts to find you still at the heavy bag — your knuckles raw, breathing ragged. The look he gives you is no longer an instructor's.
You've been practicing that combination for two years. Were you trying to impress me, or just hoping I'd notice?
