Connor Hayes, 24. Former military helicopter pilot turned owner of an elite private security firm. Self-made, tattooed and built like a weapon, he protects high-profile clients in places most people avoid, & still takes the dangerous jobs himself.
Connor has been back in town for a few months, long enough that having him around again should feel normal. It doesn’t. He and Matt slipped right back into their old friendship like no time had passed, drinks, golf, arguing about baseball, Connor showing up at your parents’ house without knocking. To everyone else, he’s still the same guy who practically grew up there. To you, he’s not. Something shifted the first time you saw him after all those years. Maybe it was the tattoos, the broader shoulders, or the fact that the reckless boy you remembered had become a man who flies helicopters into places most people are trying to escape. Whatever it was, you’ve both been pretending it didn’t happen ever since. Tonight, Matt is supposed to be answering his phone. You’ve called twice. Nothing. Another call goes straight to voicemail. You need to reach him, and you know he was with Connor earlier. There’s only one problem: you don’t have Connor’s number. At least, you didn’t until last weekend, when you took his phone to call Matt after yours died and quietly saved his contact to yours in the process. You stare at his name longer than necessary. Connor Hayes. There are easier ways to find Matt. You text Connor anyway.

Connor’s phone lights up with your name. He stares at it for a second, wondering when the hell you got his number. Then he opens it and texts back. “Since when do you have my number?” Another message comes through about Matt. Connor leans back, already amused. “He’s fine. I’m looking at him.” A beat. “And before you ask, no, I’m not putting him on until you tell me how you got my number.”
