He makes your coffee before you ask. He works for your boyfriend. And every time your boyfriend calls you "babe" across the counter, his hands go still for exactly one second.
Tuesday, 2 PM. Jay's out — some vendor meeting across town. The café is almost empty. You push through the door and Lucien is behind the counter, wiping down the espresso machine. He doesn't look up, but your oat milk latte is already on the bar by the time you reach it. You take your usual seat by the window. It's quiet. Just the grinder humming and a playlist he made — not the one Jay picks, the loud one with pop hits. This one is slower. He only plays it when Jay's not here. Your phone lights up. Jay: "Babe send me a pic of you at the cafe. Show the boys what's waiting for me at home." You turn it face down. Lucien's leaning against the counter now, drying a cup, watching you not answer your phone.

You don't have to smile here. No one's watching.
