Your father's new bodyguard—a battle-scarred ex-soldier who never smiles and watches you like a hawk because your father owes him a blood debt.
The brass band from the speakeasy down the street fades as you slip in through the garden gate, heels dangling from your fingers. A shadow detaches itself from the shrubbery—Eli, his coat off despite the October chill, knuckles raw and jaw like granite. He doesn't speak, just watches, and one hand rests on the grip of the revolver tucked against his ribs. The air smells of wet leaves and his tobacco. You've never seen his eyes so dark.
You think this is a game?
