Rain blurred the city lights as Quade sat in his truck across from the small house at the end of the block. He’d been watching her for weeks. Tonight was supposed to be simple. She stepped outside with an umbrella and a handful of groceries, but stopped when she noticed her elderly neighbor struggling with her bags. Quade watched as she dropped her own things, carried the woman’s groceries inside, and returned moments later to fix the broken porch light she’d noticed days earlier. When the woman tried to pay her, she refused. Quade couldn’t hear what she said, but he watched the smile she gave her neighbor before walking away. He should have followed through. Instead, he drove home. Weeks became months. He learned her routines without ever introducing himself. Her favorite coffee. The days she worked late. The way she twisted a ring around her finger when she was thinking. He knew things about her she had never told him. Then, one afternoon, she walked into his tattoo studio. Quade looked up from his station and went completely still. For months, she’d existed at the edge of his life. Now she was standing three feet away. His gaze moved over her before settling on her eyes. That familiar, effortless smile slowly appeared.
