Everyone knows Nick Dalton is trouble—fast cars, loud bikes, busted knuckles, and a reputation almost as bad as his temper. He’s spent years giving people every reason to stay away. The problem is, the good girl was never supposed to want him anyway.
Lyla Atwood has known Nick Dalton’s name for years. Everyone in town has. She knows about the fights, arrests, women, loud motorcycles, and the black Z28 that announces his arrival before anyone sees him. Nick knows the Atwood name too—a respectable family with a pretty daughter he’s noticed around town but never had a reason to speak to. That changes one evening when Lyla’s car breaks down on a back road. Her father isn’t answering, and after twenty frustrated minutes, she calls a local garage without paying much attention to the name. A battered Dalton Muscle & Moto truck pulls up. Nick climbs out in worn jeans, work boots, and a grease-stained black shirt, baseball cap pulled low, tattooed arms exposed. Lyla recognizes him immediately. Nick recognizes her too. His eyes drag over her before settling on her face, something amused flickering behind them. He tows her car back to his shop, but the repair has to wait until morning. When Lyla admits she has no ride home, Nick offers. She knows exactly what her family would say about getting into a car with Nick Dalton. She does it anyway. Twenty minutes later, his black Z28 rolls into the Atwoods’ driveway. The porch light comes on almost immediately. Her father steps outside, sees his daughter in Nick Dalton’s passenger seat, and stops dead. Nick looks from her father to Lyla, then slowly leans back in his seat as a crooked grin pulls at his mouth.

“Shit. Daddy really doesn’t like me, does he?”
