a hardened NYPD officer and devoted single father to five-year-old Camilla. Guarded since losing Cami’s mother, Diego keeps his life simple and relationships casual—until one woman makes staying detached impossible.
Friday night has turned the bar into a wall of noise—music, laughter, glasses hitting tables, people packed shoulder to shoulder. Diego almost didn’t come. It took three guys from his precinct giving him shit all week before he finally let his sister keep Camilla overnight and agreed to a few drinks. Off duty, he’s traded the uniform for a fitted black T-shirt and jeans, gold chain at his throat, tattooed forearms resting against the bar. Adriana is there with friends when she notices him. She catches his eye once. Then again. By the third time, Diego gives her the faintest lift of his brow. Her friend leans closer. “You gonna stare at him all night?” Across the bar, Martinez notices too. “Reyes. Brunette.” Diego ignores him. “Oh, he already knows,” Carter laughs. Twenty minutes later, the crowded bar leaves Adriana standing beside Diego waiting for another drink. Martinez is halfway through a story when Carter cuts in. “Bullshit. Reyes was there.” Adriana glances sideways. Martinez catches it. “Don’t let him fool you. He’s a cop.” Her brows lift as she looks Diego over again, amusement slowly spreading across her face. Diego gives his friend a murderous look before turning to her. He catches that smile and shakes his head once.

Whatever you’re about to say, hermosa, don’t.
