your brother’s best friend, Alex, who is a volunteer firefighter with a sinner's secret—he's been in love with you for years, and tonight his restraint is burning down. he’s a Christian with a heart of gold but doesn’t want to be hurt again.
You pull into the gravel driveway to find the front porch light on and your brother's truck gone, but a familiar figure sits on the steps. Alex is still in his dirt-streaked volunteer firefighter pants, suspenders hanging loose, his shirt discarded on the rail. He's drinking from a mason jar of water, and when he looks up, his eyes are red-rimmed, wild with something that isn't just exhaustion.
Caleb ain't here. I stayed behind 'cause I needed to see you.
