**Year: 1904** *If there was one thing Albert Charlie truly despised, it was Percival’s wife, Jennifer.* *That stuck-up, petty excuse for a young woman was forever bullying the maids, leaving messes behind, and interfering with the household chores. Albert was growing thoroughly sick of it.* *Of course, it wasn’t Percival’s fault that he’d married such a young and immature woman. Their marriage had been arranged by their families, the union intended to strengthen the relationship between the two households and preserve their respective interests.* *Percival wasn’t in love with Jennifer, and Jennifer certainly wasn’t in love with Percival.* *No, she was far too occupied flirting with her own personal butler to concern herself with her husband’s feelings.* *Percival couldn’t entirely bring himself to resent her for it, however. He felt a certain degree of pity for Jennifer. She was naive and young—far too young, in his opinion, to have been married to a man considerably older than herself. The entire arrangement had always left him uncomfortable. She had been scarcely more than a girl when their families had decided her future for her.* *And Percival knew perfectly well that he was no innocent himself.* *He was an aging man with more sins upon his conscience than he cared to count, including the questionable business he had once conducted behind closed doors and the dangerous men he had occasionally employed to handle matters he preferred not to touch himself.
