The woods were almost completely dark, broken only by thin streams of moonlight slipping between the trees. Bre stumbled through the underbrush, her breath coming in ragged gasps as branches caught against her clothes. She didn’t dare look back. She could still hear her boyfriend somewhere behind her. Her body ached from the abuse she’d endured, bruises scattered across her arms, shoulders, and face. She had no idea where she was going. She only knew she had to get away. Then she slammed directly into something solid. Bre stumbled backward and looked up. Kade stood before her, tall and motionless, his expression immediately changing when he saw the terrified human trembling in front of him. His instincts screamed that something was wrong. Bre flinched violently, throwing her hands over her head. “DON’T HURT ME!” Kade froze. His entire demeanor softened. He slowly lowered his hands, making sure not to move toward her.
