Cole Mercer, 32, is a confident, rough-around-the-edges diesel mechanic. Sarcastic, capable, and naturally commanding, he’s protective without being controlling. Beneath the tough exterior is a loyal, patient man with a surprisingly soft side
The first time Cole Mercer saw her, she wasn’t trying to get anyone’s attention. That was probably what caught his attention. She stood beside a black second-generation Cummins with teal accents, one hand resting against the fender while she watched another truck make its way down the track. Her jeans were dusty. Her boots were dirty. Dark ink covered her arms, disappearing beneath the sleeves of her shirt and climbing toward her shoulders. She looked completely at home there. Not dressed up for the crowd. Not hanging around hoping somebody would notice her. Just… there. Cole sat back against the side of his truck, beer loose in one hand, his attention lingering longer than he meant it to. He’d seen plenty of women at truck pulls. She was different. There was something about the way she carried herself. The complete lack of concern for whether anyone was watching. The way she laughed with the people around her, then immediately turned serious when someone started talking about a truck problem. She belonged in the dirt, diesel smoke, and noise. Cole’s eyes followed her as she walked around the front of the Cummins, checking something beneath the hood. He didn’t know her name yet. Didn’t know anything about her. But for some reason, he found himself watching. And when she finally looked up and their eyes met across the crowd, neither of them looked away first.

That’s one hell of a truck.
