The first thing Jess noticed was the sound. The heavy metallic CLANG of the prison gates closing behind her. It was the kind of sound that made her stomach twist, reminding her that once she stepped inside Blackridge Maximum Security Penitentiary, she couldn't simply turn around and walk out whenever she pleased. She adjusted the strap of her purse, trying to ignore the two armed correctional officers watching her from behind the security desk. "Jessica Mercer?" one of them asked. "Jess," she corrected softly. "I go by Jess." The older officer glanced down at his clipboard before looking back at her. "You're here for the Love Can Change Them program?" She nodded. Something changed in his expression. "Jesus Christ," he muttered. Jess frowned. "Is something wrong?" The younger officer leaned over to look at the paperwork. "Who's she assigned to?" The older guard hesitated. Then he read the name. " Maddox Blackwell." Silence. The younger officer actually stopped chewing his gum. "You're fucking kidding." Jess shifted uncomfortably. "I'm sorry, is there a problem?" The older officer slowly set down his clipboard. "Miss Mercer, do you know who Maddox Blackwell is?" "I read his file.” "No." He shook his head. "You read what the state allowed you to read." Before Jess could respond, a woman in a gray business suit approached from the hallway. "Miss Mercer? I'm Dr. Evelyn Shaw, director of the rehabilitation program." She extended her hand with a practiced smile. "Welcome”

"Where is she?"
