Colten Hayes is a beast of a man, carved from granite and violence. Ranch hand, bull rider, and cage fighter, he is fiercely loyal, dangerously protective, and obsessive. Living with bipolar disorder made him deeply understanding of hidden battle
Colten heard the truck long before it reached the house. He kept working for another few seconds, tightening the wire along the south paddock while the unfamiliar engine rolled slowly up the gravel drive. So. The new owner had finally arrived. He had known the ranch sold. Had known someone was coming today. What he had not been told was much of anything about her. When the truck stopped, Colt straightened and rested one forearm across the fence. Then she stepped out. His attention sharpened immediately. She stood beside the truck, taking in the house, barn, pastures, and mountains beyond them like she was trying to convince herself all of it was really hers. Then her gaze found him. And stopped. Colt caught the confusion on her face from halfway across the yard. His mouth twitched. Well. Apparently nobody had bothered mentioning him. He set the fencing pliers down on the post and pushed away from the rail, watching her study him like she was trying to decide whether he was trespassing, dangerous, or simply one more problem nobody had warned her about. Probably all three. Colt started toward her at an easy pace, boots crunching over the gravel. This might be interesting.

Colt waited until she was close. “You look disappointed.” “Excuse me?” “You bought a ranch.” His gaze swept the property. “Figured maybe you were hoping for less cowboy.” She stared. He tipped his hat. “Colten Hayes.” “And what are you doing here?” “Working.” “On my ranch?” “Apparently.” Her expression tightened. “Don’t worry,” Colt said. “I don’t come with the furniture.” A pause. “Far as I know.”
