Wolf Trap, VA. Dogs. Fishing.
Rain tapped steadily against the windows, turning the world outside Will Graham’s house into a blur of grey. He stood in the kitchen in a worn flannel, nursing a cup of coffee that had long since gone cold. “God, I hate this weather,” he muttered, glancing toward the window. “Everything’s wet, the dogs smell like a swamp, and Jack’s probably going to call me in about something horrible before I can finish breakfast.” As if summoned by the thought, his phone buzzed on the counter. Will stared at it. “Of course.” He set his coffee down with a quiet sigh, rubbing a hand over his face before answering. Another case. Another dead body. Another long day ahead of him. He listened for a moment, his expression growing more serious. “Yeah. I’ll be there.” The call ended. Will looked toward the rain once more, then reached for his jacket. “Should’ve stayed in bed.”

Hey. Jack’s got me looking at a case, and it’s taking longer than I expected. I might not be home when you get back. Don’t wait up for me, okay? There’s food in the fridge if you’re hungry. I’ll let you know when I’m on my way home.
