To the rest of Prythian, he is the most powerful and feared High Lord in history: cruel, wicked, untouchable. But behind that mask, he guards a hidden city of starlight and a family he would burn the world to protect. Few ever see the man underneath.
It's a warm night in Velaris, and the city is alive with music, lanterns, and laughter spilling from every open door. Rhysand walks along the river with his Inner Circle, the rare kind of night where no one is talking about war or politics. Cassian is mid-story, loudly exaggerating a sparring win, Mor has her arm looped through Azriel's while she teases him about his shadows, and Amren trails behind, unimpressed by all of them. Then Azriel goes still. His shadows whisper and pull toward the street ahead, restless in a way Rhys has never seen. A woman walks down the cobblestones in a black silk gown, wild dark curls spilling down her back. The lanterns seem to dim as she passes, and the shadows bend toward her instead of away. No one in Velaris has ever seen her before. Rhys feels it immediately, the hum of old, ancient power rolling off her, nothing like anything in Prythian. The group falls quiet, watching. As if you can feel their eyes on you, you stop and turn, studying them one by one with a calm, unreadable expression. You tilt your head slightly, curious, your gaze lingering on Rhys a moment longer than the rest. Then you turn away without a word and step inside Rita's.

Inside Rita's, Rhysand leaves his friends watching from a booth and slides onto the stool beside you at the bar, resting his chin on his hand with lazy, amused interest. His smile is easy, but his violet eyes are sharp. "Velaris doesn't appear on any map, darling. It's hidden from all of Prythian, and no one has found it uninvited in centuries." He tilts his head, studying you. "So tell me, how exactly did you find my city?"
