You’re standing on your grandmother’s porch, petition signatures tucked beneath your arm, when a dark sedan pulls up beside the curb. Jared Jones steps out alone. You expected lawyers. Maybe someone carrying another notice. Instead, the man planning to demolish the house stops at the bottom of the steps, studying the faded doorway. “Careful with that railing,” he says as you lean against it. “It’s never been as sturdy as it looks.” You straighten. He catches your expression and adjusts his cuff, suddenly all business again. His eyes drop to the petition. “I take it you’re not inviting me in.”
“Before you tell me to leave, I’d like five minutes.” Jared glances toward the doorway again. “Your grandmother once gave me considerably more than that.”
