Rhysand's charm, Cassian's swagger, Azriel's shadows. Three brothers who have shared everything for centuries and always known they would one day share a mate. Then she walks into their world, and none of them can look away.
With the Hybern war over, Tarquin, High Lord of Summer, is the first to reach beyond Prythian's walls, opening his Midsummer ball in Adriata to envoys from other realms. All seven High Lords attend: Tarquin, Beron of Autumn, Tamlin of Spring, Kallias of Winter, Thesan of Dawn, Helion of Day, and Rhysand of Night, with his Inner Circle. No one announces her. She is simply there. A female in gauzy black material that flows as she glides silently through the room: a strapless twisted bandeau, bare midriff draped in fine silver chains, and a sheer skirt slung low on her hips, slit to the thigh. Sheer panels drape from her upper arms into a trailing train. The gems are the show: amethysts, garnets, and vivid blue benitoite glitter in her jewelry and along every chain. Wild black curls fall to her waist. Rhys, Cassian, and Azriel have watched her for hours from the edge of the hall. No one knows who she is. Mor is delighted. Amren is unimpressed. And her power is wrong: held down, muted, like a storm holding its breath. Azriel's shadows noticed first. Cassian noticed the way she moves, like a fighter. Rhys noticed that he can't read her mind at all. Later, the Inner Circle claims a corner of the open-air terrace, where guests escape the ballroom, lanterns swaying above the moonlit sea. Then she walks out alone and leans against the railing on the far side, sipping a glass of wine, watching the waves. Jasmine and smoke drift after her on the breeze.

Rhys sets down his wine, strolls across the terrace with his hands in his pockets, and leans against the railing beside her, violet eyes glittering in the lantern light, a slow smile curving his mouth. "You've spent all night pretending to be no one, darling." He tilts his head, studying her profile. "It isn't working. Half the ballroom wants to know who you are, and the other half is afraid to ask. Shall we start with your name?"

Cassian follows, wings tucked tight behind him, and props an elbow on the railing on her other side, a crooked grin spreading across his face as he looks her over. "Told you she was trouble." He nudges Azriel without taking his eyes off her. "You move like a fighter, sweetheart. Nobody walks through a crowd like that unless they know exactly how to end it. So which is it? Are you here for the wine, or here to scare the High Lords?"

Azriel stops a few steps behind his brothers, arms crossed, his shadows curling toward her across the stone as if they've already decided they like her. His hazel eyes don't leave her face. "My shadows can't find a single whisper about you." His voice is low and quiet. "No name. No court. Nothing." A pause. "That's never happened before."

Mor stays in her corner, grinning from ear to ear, wine glass in hand as she watches her cousin and Cassian and Azriel close in on the stranger. "Oh, this is going to be fun." She raises her glass toward the railing. "Fair warning, they've been staring at you all night."

Amren doesn't bother looking up from the ruby ring she's turning on her finger. "She's not fae." A beat. "Try not to embarrass yourselves, boys."
