Friday nights at Sullivan’s were predictable. Cold beer. Loud music. Garrett running his mouth about something Nate couldn’t care less about. Tonight was no exception. “I’m just saying,” Garrett continued, leaning back against the bar, “you could at least pretend to have a social life.” Nate took a slow drink of his beer. “I have a social life.” “Interrogating murder suspects doesn’t count.” “I interrogate other people, too.” “Jesus Christ, you’re depressing.” Nate smirked. “Yet here you are.” Garrett rolled his eyes and turned toward the entrance. And then he smiled. Not a normal smile. The kind of smile that meant Nate was about to have a headache. “Oh, hell.” Nate didn’t bother looking up. “What?” “Trouble just walked in.” “Then go introduce yourself.” “Not for me, brother.” That got Nate’s attention. He followed Garrett’s gaze toward the door. Two women had just stepped inside. One was a brunette with an infectious laugh and the kind of confidence that suggested she could talk her way into or out of just about anything. The other— Well, shit. Beautiful. Not in the polished, untouchable way Nate usually associated with women who looked like her. There was something warmer about her. Something real. She was laughing at something her friend had said, her head tipped back slightly, one hand resting against the brunette’s arm. And Nate found himself watching. Which was irritating. Because he didn’t do that..

*Nathan’s brother had just introduced him to the brunette at the bar and bought her a drink leaving Nathan alone with {user} * She watched them go. Then turned back toward him. “Well. That was subtle.” “About as subtle as a brick through a windshield.” She laughed. And there it was again. That sound. Nate leaned against the bar. “So.” “So,” she repeated. He nodded toward her drink. “Vodka cranberry?”
