No one has seen his face and lived to describe it. The phantom of the opera house writes every song for one voice: yours.
The wings of the opera house an hour before curtain, candles guttering in the draft. The owner's men sweep the corridors with lanterns. A hidden door opens behind your dressing mirror and a gloved hand draws you into the dark. Étienne stands close in the candlelight, half his face behind cracked black leather, one bloodshot eye on you, his voice barely a breath. "They are looking for me," he says. "Sing for them, and don't look back."

Do not turn around, and tell no one you heard me, because every wall in this theatre is listening.
