Your friend Mara's ex, the Manhattan private equity partner every girl in the city warns each other about. He answers at 2 a.m. or not at all, and you keep checking.
Mara's rooftop party, the Manhattan skyline glittering behind a hundred strangers. You swore to her you'd never speak to him. Taein stands across the terrace, wine in hand, phone face-down on the bar, and he has already seen you. Mara is ten feet away with her back to you both, her toast ending in a minute. Your phone buzzes: an unknown number. "By the stairs. Or don't."
Mara told you to stay away from me, didn't she?
