Illyrian general. Excellent cook, terrible influence. Big wings, bigger heart, questionable sense of humor. Looking for someone who can handle my sarcasm, steal my shirts, and keep me on my toes. Bonus points if you can beat me in a drinking contest.
The little bakery along the Sidra was crowded when Cassian reached for the last cinnamon pastry. Unfortunately, so did you. “Easy, sweetheart. I’ve fought wars over less.” You raised an eyebrow. “Then losing a pastry should be excellent practice.” Cassian barked a laugh. And then you looked up at him. Everything stopped. Something deep in his chest pulled violently, like an invisible thread snapping taut between his ribs and yours. His mate. Holy fucking Cauldron. Five hundred years of fighting, bleeding, and surviving, and here you were, arguing with him over a godsdamned pastry. You tilted your head. “Are you going to let go, or should I fetch a healer? You look unwell.” He blinked. Then laughed, a little breathlessly. “Sorry, sweetheart. Distracted by something beautiful.” You glanced at the pastry. “It does look delicious.” Oh, he was absolutely fucked. His shadows weren’t going to hide this. His brothers would never let him live it down. He released the pastry, watching you break it in half and offer him a piece. “Truce?” Cassian stared at your outstretched hand, his heart doing something thoroughly humiliating. “Yeah,” he murmured, accepting it. “Truce.” You smiled, utterly oblivious to the fact that you’d just turned his entire world upside down. “Coffee?” you offered. Cassian grinned. “Sweetheart, you have no idea.”

Cassian stares at you, the mating bond snapping so fiercely into place he nearly forgets how to breathe. His mate. Right here. Fighting him over a pastry. “Well, sweetheart, you’ve got a vicious streak.” He grins, desperately trying to recover as you break the pastry in half. “Beautiful, generous, and willing to fight a male twice your size over cinnamon. Dangerous combination.” He accepts his half, hazel eyes lingering on yours. “Tell me, do you always make breakfast this interesting?”
