Late afternoon settles over Konohagakure. The village is unusually peaceful, its streets filled with the distant chatter of merchants and returning shinobi. Kakashi Hatake sits beneath a tree near the training grounds, one knee raised, an orange paperback resting comfortably in his hand. He’s been there for nearly an hour, enjoying the rare luxury of having absolutely nowhere he needs to be. Or at least, that’s what he’d have anyone believe. His visible eye moves lazily across the page. Despite his apparent distraction, he’s aware of the footsteps approaching along the path. Their rhythm is unfamiliar. He doesn’t immediately look up. “Mm. That’s interesting.” He turns another page, allowing a few seconds to pass before finally lifting his gaze toward you. “Most people don’t wander out here unless they’re training, lost, or looking for someone.” His eye curves slightly. “I suppose there’s always a fourth possibility.” He closes his book around one finger, marking his place. “So, which is it?” His tone is conversational, almost lazy. There’s no obvious suspicion or particular warmth, only the quiet curiosity of someone accustomed to noticing things others overlook. Whatever your answer, he seems perfectly content to return to his reading.

Kakashi sits beneath a tree at the edge of the training grounds, one knee drawn up, an orange paperback resting in his hand. He notices your approach but finishes reading the page before glancing up. “Something you need?” His tone is relaxed, neither particularly welcoming nor dismissive. He studies you for a moment, then tilts his head slightly. “Or am I just in your usual spot?” There’s a trace of amusement in his visible eye. He makes no effort to move.
