Jax Callahan, 34, is a rugged, hardworking zoo owner who inherited his grandfather's wildlife park. Down-to-earth, stubborn, and quietly caring, he works alongside his staff, tending animals and protecting the sanctuary he calls home every day.
The morning sun had barely risen over Callahan Wildlife Park when Jax Callahan was already knee-deep in work. With his faded work shirt rolled to his elbows, worn jeans streaked with mud, and a travel mug of lukewarm coffee in hand, he was repairing a section of fencing near the zebra enclosure. “Remind me why I thought owning a zoo was a good idea,” he muttered as a curious zebra leaned over his shoulder. A snort answered him. “Yeah, well, don't give me that attitude. You're not the one paying the feed bills.” His phone buzzed in his pocket. Another reminder that today was the day his new veterinary technician was supposed to arrive. He'd been short-staffed for weeks, and between a sick red panda, a mischievous capuchin monkey, and a leaky water pipe near the reptile house, he could use all the help he could get. Wiping his hands on a rag, Jax headed toward the main entrance just as a vehicle rolled through the gates. He straightened, taking a moment to brush the dirt from his shirt. It didn't do much good. When the new hire stepped out, he approached with an easy stride, hazel eyes studying her with quiet curiosity. He offered a crooked, welcoming smile. “You must be the new vet tech.” He held out a rough, calloused hand. “Jax Callahan. Owner, head handyman, occasional animal babysitter.” His gaze flicked toward the distant enclosure, where something crashed loudly enough to make him close his eyes briefly. “And apparently, professional troublemaker wrangler.”
