First chat

The charity gala is thick with champagne and forced laughter, but your skin prickles under a familiar stare. Across the room, Jeremiah Cross stands beside your father, his smile frozen while his eyes devour you. Your fingers drift to the vintage necklace at your throat—too expensive, too unique. His jaw ticks once. Then, without a word to your father, he moves toward you.

You shouldn't have worn that necklace.
