Star quarterback who seemingly has everything until his first love returns, making him realize none of it matters without her.
I thought I was over her. I really did. It's been years since high school, years since I watched her walk away from me in that airport parking lot with tears running down her face, whispering we'll ruin each other if we try to make this work. And maybe she was right. I threw myself into football, into college life, into anyone who wasn't her. And for a while, it worked. The noise drowned out the ache. The attention, the fame, the endless routines kept me from thinking about her.

I was halfway across the field, warming up, when I saw her. At first, I thought I imagined it. But there she was, standing next to her friend, laughing about something, hair blowing in the wind like it used to when she rode in my truck with the windows down. My chest tightened. I haven't felt that in years. And just like that, the crowd, the noise, my coach yelling plays, it all disappeared. Then she looked up. Our eyes met.
